OK, anyone wanna play "Alternate Universe" with me? :D

The thread about your favorite past Suns teams, and some thoughts about former Suns, have got me thinking, and have led to this thread. :) What would it have been like with Steve Nash running the show with some of our old favorite suns, like King Rex and Uncle Cliffy?

Lets assume we're building around Steve Nash circa late 90s. Lets assume that we still have some type of Run 'n Gun/7SOL type system to work with.

I want to do this as a serious excercise, not just fanwank super teams. Lets keep it semi realistic. Lol. This would effectively divert the Kidd/Marbury years and allow Steve to develop earlier.

I'm starting with the 1996/1997 Suns roster and i'm using basketball-reference.com as a guide.

- before the season began, we received a draft pick that would become James Posey in 1999. what did we do with *that* pick? Lol!
- we traded chucky brown for a player that we waived and a pick we didn't use.
- we traded robert horry and joe klein for cedric ceballos and a player that we waived.
- right after the season ended, we drafted Stephen Jackson.

i removed the Kidd trade, since we are building around Nash, and therefore removed our temp signings at the end of the year.

This leaves us with a roster of:

13 Steve Nash G 6-3
7 Kevin Johnson G 6-1
10 Sam Cassell G 6-3

3 Rex Chapman G 6-4
11 Wesley Person G 6-6
4 Michael Finley G-F 6-7

1 Cedric Ceballos F
15 Danny Manning F-C 6-10
45 A.C. Green F-C 6-9
2 Mark Bryant F-C 6-9
23 Wayman Tisdale F-C 6-9
18 Hot Rod Williams F-C

new draft pick: Stephen Jackson

During the off season, we signed:

Tom Chambers
Clifford Robinson
George McCloud.

I am going to stop here, at Oct 1st, 1997, right before the McDyess trade, to open up conversation.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/...nsactions.html

there are the exact details of the trade (hey, answered my own question about the draft pick), and the moves we made afterward. Of course, we all know how this story really ends, which is part of the reason for this cosmic what if of mine.

Anyone have any thoughts, or find this interesting? Or are you tired of my constant rehashings and what ifs?

Ahhh the off-season. Time to think about what has been and look ahead to the future (insert negative .comment about our future looking bad here).
I was just thinking of of my favorite Suns moments. During the Lakers-Nuggets series they recapped the last time a team came back from 3-1 down....yup
still the Suns Back from the dead comeback vs the lakers in 06. Personally that was my favorite Suns team of probabaly all time (I was only 6 back in 1993,
although KJ is still probabaly my favorite SUN of all time) I always believed, even down 3-1, that the suns would comeback and win that series, because they just had
so much more talent and heart then the Lakers. But their have been quite a few memorable teams from the past 10 years lets take a look at the candidates and their resumes
Okay, so the Youtube thread was dead, and that was all that's said...
So I thought some daily ear candy would be good enough instead...
I'd share something with you from the past of my empty, brain-dead head...
As obscure and rare as I want it to be, each night before I go to bed...
A little non-conformity, is something you should be fed...
And maybe some original thought, is what there shall be spread...

Arizona lawmakers at this moment are in conference committee to reconcile differences in bills coming out of the House and the Senate.

One of those is Senate Bill 1449, which spells out proposed changes in election law, including changes in recall election law.

Sources are telling our reporters at the Capitol that conference committee members include allies of former Senate President Russell Pearce. Among those lawmakers are Republicans who have argued that Pearce ought to be reimbursed $260,000 for expenses incurred during his recall election last year.

Let's make something plain: Those Pearce "expenses" are almost entirely dollars he raised during the recall, for the recall, and much of it from contributors from out of state.

If these Pearce supporters connive at this 11th hour to "reimburse" Pearce, let it be known they are fooling no one. They are using scarce state funds to hand Russell Pearce a pay package of more than a quarter million dollars for the inconvenience of having experienced a recall, and to help finance his return to office when he runs again this fall.

That includes making changes to the law that allow him to get a payoff somewhere down the line.

That, simply, is an outrage that cannot stand.

The state Legislature declined yesterday to consider a tiny increase in funds for the developmentally disabled.

The Legislature decided yesterday to leave over 100,000 poor kids without access to health care, languishing instead on waiting lists.

The Legislature yesterday left highways untended, needed schools unbuilt, and uncounted other state services grievously unfunded.

Don't you dare, in the security of your back rooms, use the confusion of the 11th hour of the legislative session to cut a check to Russell Pearce.

Don't you dare.

Republican politicians like to wear their faith on their sleeves and talk about their Christian values. But when it comes to practicing what you preach, the GOP has a long way to go.

Republicans don't have any more respect for the Bible than they do the Constitution. Conservatives talk about their dedication to the Constitution but they support the Arizona anti-immigration law which is a mockery of our founding document. Right wingers talk about their the importance of their faith but they completely ignore the biblical injunctions to help the poor.

On Tuesday, 90 faculty members and priests at Georgetown, the Jesuit University in Washington, criticized Mitt Romney's budget buddy, Rep. Paul Ryan, for saying his budget plan which includes cuts in antipoverty programs and school lunches and tax breaks for bankers and billionaires—was inspired by his Catholic faith. The letter to Ryan reads, "Your budget appears to reflect the values of your favorite philosopher, Ayn Rand, rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ."

The letter goes on to say, "We would be remiss in our duties to you and our students if we did not challenge your continuing misuse of Catholic teaching to defend a budget plan that decimates food programs for struggling families, radically weakens protections for the elderly and sick and gives more tax breaks to the wealthiest few."

The New Testament chronicles Jesus Christ's concern for the poor. In his haste to devour "The Fountainhead," Ryan apparently didn't have time to read it. So here are some of the highlights for Congressman Ryan courtesy of Jim Wallis, the author of God's Politics.

In the Magnificant, Mary discusses the meaning of the coming of Jesus when she says, "He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly: he has filled the hungry with good things; and sent the rich empty away."

In his gospel, Matthew writes, "Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

You get the idea. A little more Bible study and a lot more compassion for the poor would go a long way for Romney, Ryan and other Republicans.

Paul Ryan Suddenly Does Not Embrace Ayn Rand's Teachings

Quote:

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) tried to send the message this week that, contrary to "urban legend," he is not obsessed with philosopher and author Ayn Rand.

"I reject her philosophy," Ryan told National Review on Thursday. "It's an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person's view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas. Don’t give me Ayn Rand."

Best known for her novels "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged," Rand advocated a philosophy that emphasizes the individual over the collective, and viewed capitalism as the only system truly based on the protection of the individual. She has been a significant influence on libertarians and conservatives.

Ryan, whose name has been floated as a possible running mate for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, appeared to be distancing himself from Rand in response to a public letter he received this week from nearly 90 faculty and administrators at Georgetown University. In their letter, they criticize him for misusing Catholic social teaching in defending his budget, which hurts the poor by proposing significant cuts to anti-hunger programs, slashing Pell Grants for low-income students and calling for a replacement of Medicare with a voucher-like system. They also invoke Rand's name.

"As scholars, we want to join the Catholic bishops in pointing out that his budget has a devastating impact on programs for the poor," said Jesuit Father Thomas J. Reese, one of the organizers of the letter. "Your budget appears to reflect the values of your favorite philosopher, Ayn Rand, rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her call to selfishness and her antagonism toward religion are antithetical to the Gospel values of compassion and love."

But any urban legend about Ryan's affinity for Rand surely started with Ryan himself, who, prior to this week, had no qualms about gushing about Rand's influence on his guiding principles.

"The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand," Ryan said during a 2005 event honoring Rand in Washington, D.C., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported in April 2009.

During the 2005 gathering, Ryan told the audience, "Almost every fight we are involved in here on Capitol Hill ... is a fight that usually comes down to one conflict -- individualism versus collectivism." The event was hosted by The Atlas Society, which prominently features a photo of Rand on its website and describes itself as a group that "promotes open Objectivism: the philosophy of reason, achievement, individualism, and freedom."

Ryan also said during a 2003 interview with the Weekly Standard, "I give out 'Atlas Shrugged' as Christmas presents, and I make all my interns read it. Well ... I try to make my interns read it.” He noted that he "looked into" Rand's work when he was younger, but reiterated that he is a Christian and reads the Bible often.

In 2009, Ryan posted two videos on his Facebook page raving about the importance of Rand's views.

"If 'Atlas Shrugged' author Ayn Rand were alive today, here's the urgent message I think she'd be conveying," Ryan wrote alongside the first video, titled "Ayn Rand's relevance in 2009."

He says in the video:

What's unique about what's happening today in government, in the world, in America, is it's as if we're living in an Ayn Rand novel right now. I think Ayn Rand did the best job of anybody to build the moral case for capitalism. And that morality of capitalism is under assault. And we are going to replace it with a crony capitalism, collectivist, government-run system which is creeping its way into government. And so if Ayn Rand were here today, I think she would do a great job in showing us just how wrong what government is doing is. Not the quantitative analysis, not the numbers, but the morality of what is wrong with what government is doing today.

In the second video, titled "Ayn Rand & 2009 America, Part 2," Ryan says it doesn't surprise him that sales of "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged" have "surged" since President Barack Obama took office.

"It's that kind of thinking, that kind of writing, that is sorely needed right now. And I think a lot of people would observe that we are living in an Ayn Rand novel right now, metaphorically speaking," Ryan says. "The attack on Democratic capitalism, on individualism and freedom in America is an attack on the moral foundation of America. And Ayn Rand more than anyone else did a fantastic job of explaining the morality of capitalism, the morality of individualism. This, to me, is what matters most."

Some of Ryan's critics took a shot at him for suddenly distancing himself from Rand.

"Not pure enough on entitlement cuts @philipaklein @robertcostaNRO Paul Ryan on Ayn Rand: 'I reject her philosophy,'" Austan Goolsbee, the former chairman of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, tweeted Thursday.

UPDATE: 5:14 p.m. -- Ryan spokesman Kevin Seifert downplayed the lawmaker's apparent change of tune on Rand.

"I wouldn't make too much of this one way or another. Congressman Ryan was not 'distancing himself' from Rand, merely correcting several false storylines that are out there, such as the myth that he requires all of his staffers to read Atlas Shrugged. Saying he 'rejects Ayn Rand's philosophy' was simply meant to correct a popular falsehood that Congressman Ryan is an Objectivist -- he isn't now and never claimed to be," Seifert said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

GILBERT, AZ - Sources tell ABC15 that a prominent former neo-Nazi is among five people shot and killed Wednesday in a Gilbert neighborhood.

Police say the victims in the Wednesday shooting are two men, two women, and a young girl between 1 and 2 years old.

Sources say J.T. Ready, who was running for Pinal County Sheriff, was involved in the shooting, however it is not clear if he was the gunman or a victim.

Ready was known to be a member of the National Socialist Movement who advocated using violence to stop people from crossing the border. In a 2010 interview with ABC15 he discussed his beliefs and showed off his cache of high-powered weapons.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims and suspect.

Air15 video from the scene near Cooper and Warner roads showed a portion of the street blocked off by police crime tape Wednesday afternoon.

Nearby Mesquite Junior High School and Gilbert Elementary School were placed on lockdown for a short time but that has been lifted, according to a district officials.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say a man fatally shot four people before being found dead in what is believed to be a domestic situation. Police have not yet confirmed if the shooter committed suicide.

Police say officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun at the scene.

The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force has responded to the scene to assist Gilbert police in their investigation. Ready's connection to the home where the shooting happened isn't entirely clear at this time.

A motive in the shooting is unknown.

Check back for updates on this developing story.

So there was some good news today!

It would be derelict in my duties as informer to disregard this infamous pic of JD Ready with Russell Pearce, who served as Elder to bring JT into his church.

With Pearce recalled and now Ready "deady," this ushers in a new era where those who threaten legislators lives to promote their Right-wing agenda's have significantly been reduced in their power. What else can I say? FUCK YEAH!!!

Aside from a handful of daily posters, the board is probably going to be pretty dead this Summer, so I figured we could just run one thread for the off-season. Lets continue to post trade ideas in the rebuild thread.

Informer posted a great breakdown of our cap situation that was written over at BSotS: HERE

Some of their cap hold figures seem high ($17M for Nash, $9M for Hill for example), but the Suns can't do anything until they renounce the rights to Nash and Hill regardless. So if you're in the "re-sign Nash for 3 more years" camp, you shouldn't panic when you see that the team has renounced their "Bird" rights. The article suggests that amnestying Childress or Warrick would likely be their 2nd move, which would free up an additional $6M of cap space if it's Childress and $4M if it's Warrick. I'll update the thread as these moves are made, but I don't think we'll be seeing anything until June.

Key Off-Season Dates
The NBA Early Entry Eligibility Deadline is April 29th at 11:59 PM EST
The NBA Draft Lottery is May 30th.
The 2012 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago is June 6th - June 10th.
The NBA Draft is June 28th.
Players become Free Agents July 1st.
Teams may begin signing players July 11th.
The Las Vegas Summer League is July 13th - 22nd.
The Summer Olympics are July 27th – August 12th.

Okay, the matchups are all set. Who's going to win each series, and by how many games? Who's winning the West and the East? Who's taking home the title? Feel free to just list your predictions of the series results, or add more commentary to it if you like.

WEST:

UTA over SAS 4-3
OKC over DAL 4-1
LAL over DEN 4-1
MEM over LAC 4-2

MEM over UTA 4-2
OKC over LAL 4-2

OKC over MEM 4-1

EAST:

CHI over PHI 4-0
MIA over NYK 4-1
IND over ORL 4-1
BOS over ATL 4-3

CHI over BOS 4-2
MIA over IND 4-0

CHI over MIA 4-3

FINALS:

OKC over CHI 4-2

Commentary:

Okay, the most bold prediction I have up there by far is the Jazz upsetting San Antonio. Is that insane? I just think the Jazz are sneaky good. They have a huge front line, tons of size and strength and athleticism, and they're hungry. I realize that the Spurs have been destroying everybody down the stretch, but they're still an old team without a lot of good size. Isn't the Jazz the exact kind of team that could give them fits? I know it's a pretty crazy prediction, but I'm going with it. When they win, I'll say I told you so.

I also have Memphis going to the WCF. I don't think Memphis is the greatest team ever or anything; it's more about the matchups. I think the Clippers are paper tigers and that Memphis will be able to out-muscle them in the first round. And vs. Utah, I figure the Jazz will be just happy to be there while Memphis has already been this far and will be hungry to go further.

No real surprise to have OKC going to the Finals. They're an amazing team and will be a lot of people's pick.

In the East, I don't really see any upsets. The only real prediction that matters is, do you think the Bulls will beat Miami in the ECF? Because we KNOW both of those teams are getting to the ECF. I say the Bulls have more overall talent and depth. I know Rose is hurt, but I think by ECF time he will be able to do what he does.

The eye-roll prediction this year in the East, to me, is people saying the Knicks will upset Miami. Yeah, right. The Knicks have some talent, but there is no way they are beating Miami. The Heat have way more talent at the top and are just a better-constructed team.

West

Spurs vs Jazz : Spurs 4-1

This should be a cake walk for the Spurs

Thunder vs Mavericks : Mavs 4-3

I know it doesn't make sense but I think they can pull it off.

Lakers vs Nuggets : Lakers 4-3

The Lakers will have some trouble with the Nuggets.

Grizzlies vs Clippers : Grizzlies 4-2

The bigs for the Grizzlies are going to wreck the Clips.

East

Bulls vs 76ers : Bulls 4-3

Even though they haven't been playing great I think the 76ers will push the Bulls to a game 7.

Heat vs Knicks : Heat 4-2

Heat are just too good for the Knicks to have any sort of shot.

Pacers vs Magic : Pacers 4-0

The Magic are a mess.

Celtics vs Hawks : Hawks 4-1

Celtics are over the hill.

Please post your:

Season narrative

Best Game

Worst game

Player of the year

Worst player of the year

Thoughts for next season.

Season Narrative: Lockout shortened season goes by without anyone in town noticing and Suns fail to make playoffs for second season in a row.

Best Game: Win against Lakers.

Worst Game: Probably loss to Golden State before All Star Break

Player of the year: Jared Dudley. Established himself as a legitimate starter in this league.

Worst player of the year: Shannon Brown. I dont think the Suns have ever had such a "chucker" since I began watching.

Thoughts for next season: So much is unkown, but we do know that 17 million is committed to Frye, Warrick and Childress next year and 18 million the year after that. If they make any moves, lets hope one is amnestying (verb?) one of those guys.

Although we know little of the plans for next season and beyond for Steve Nash, after watching tonights game i felt it appropriate to put it out to the techno-world, my man-love for the 'Nashty' one!!!!

He has given me and all suns fans over the journey, through regular seasons, playoffs and conference finals, fadeaway jumpers, amazing layoffs and clutch three pointers, so much joy that if it was to be his last game in the purple and orange, who could begrudge him going to a contender (as long as it is not the spurs!!). Nash more than any other would deserve it!!!

As a fan on the otherside of the world, my greatest memory was seeing Nash during the SSOL era going toe to toe with the Mavs live at US Airways and remarking to my wife at the time how he made the game seem so easy live opening up holes in defenses that never seemed to be there.

(If it happens), it will be hard next year to watch him run around in another uniform, but those who will be cheering loudest for him and the team he is on will be us loyal suns fans because we know how much he tried to bring a championship here, how much he loves this team and how he gave everything he had to add a banner to the rafters in Phoenix!!!
