I want to welcome you "newbies" to the site.. Many of you have been reading here for a while.. Many of you have an idea of how things are typically done around here..

For those that do not..

There's an ebb and flow we have going here.. Your opinion is alwyas wecome, but to stay in the good graces of the Veterans around here..

1. Do we really need another topic?

Take a look at the last few days worth of posts.. Maybe something you want to bring up is already a current topic.. Big news is an exception (Vin baker signing is not big news..)

We typically post a daily news thread, and a game day thread. Most posts can go here..

2. Is this trade even feesible..

Trades are fun. Try being realistic. Post trades that work salary wise, and actually help all parites involved. We are not trading Jim Jackson, Dijon and a pick for Ray Allen.. (Wait.. could we?)

3. Don't flame.

Stay on topic. Keep the posts about the game.. Sure, people say dumb things.. You can disagree and not call them an idiot. IDIOTS!

4. Watch those avatars..

People like to read phxsuns.net at work. Avatars that are explicit or too large can make this tough. Lets be considerate. Or I'll have to turn them off or tighten the rules..

This is a good start. Welcome and enjoy!

I love the newb reminders. You should make this an email forward to any new person that signs up. Make sure it's in the email with the password, cause it will make them read it. :D That way if they don't see the sticky they will know the guidelines already.

I can identify with this rule. At another forum I visit, 5 or 6 prominent members decided it'd be a cool idea if they all had thematic signatures with barely-covered/scantily-clad women. Needless to say, it made it a little tough to view the forum in my university's computer lab.

Then there was cap's avatar from a week ago...And while it wasn't really explicit, it did make it awkward to view this forum in public. Not to mention, it was an attention-stealer; a couple of times, cap's posts made me forget what the topic was even addressing.

Well I'm not really a new member. I'm an avid reader but rarely post. So I thought what a better time to make my once a year post. Alot of you know me through the vet league(I won the rook league my first try I might add).

Anyways, I'm in Baghdad right now fighting Mr. Bush's war. I was thrilled to find out we have internet access in our rooms. So I get to listen to Al calling the games. They also have the Air Force Network that shows all kinds of American t.v. plus every nationally televised sports event. So I've been able to watch a few games as well and won't miss our run in the playoffs.
I also wanted to express my thanks to everyone for making this site by far the best site for a true diehard. I almost feel as I have missed nothing.

Hey all,

Like xiknight, I'm an 'old lurker/member' who doesn't post much. Been reading and occasionally chiming in since the AZCentral days.

Drifted away for awhile a year or so ago, and then decided that I would jinx the team if I posted during their playoff run. Stupid? Yes. Effective way to limit my online time and focus on work? Yes.

Now? Well, it's like family...you can stay away for awhile, but eventually you have to stop by for a visit. ;) I've been posting occasionally at other sites, so I figure any kind of jinx is already broken (besides...with the injuries this year, does it matter...*sigh*).

Props to xiknight...keep the faith and be safe out there. Glad you have access to a bit of homelife (aka, Suns and stuff).

Sose you definately made my week, thanks a lot! I've been coming to this website for a while and now I'm finaly here! I grew up going to Suns' games back when the Suns were playing at Veteran's Memorial. I remember getting autographs from players where the players would run onto the court. Back in those days fans could communicate with the players a lot more before the games. I also went to the Phoenix Suns camp at the JCC every summer, where one or two Phoenix Suns players would show up every week and give us autographs and pictures. Kevin Johnson was my hero, my bedding including Phoenix Suns sheets, pillows and blankets. The Suns are in my blood. I look forward to participating with all of you.

RIGHT ON!!! A lefty, 'eh? (just now caught your post in the Newbie Intro thread  )

I swing a 4-piece myself! Blue Oyster Pearls from 1967: Slingerland 14 x 7 10-lug snare, 13 x 9 rack tom, 16 x 16 floor tom & a 20 x 16 bass. 12" hats (Avedis Zildjian, circa 1948), 18" medium thin crash, 22" heavy ride and yes, a 16" Paiste China as well. :D As soon as I can find a half-way decent bass-mount cymbal arm, an 8" splash will soon follow - along with another floor tom, if I can find a Blue Oyster 18 x 16 tom, that is. :D

Looks like you've got one of those 13" racks as a floor tom on this set-up - well, it looks similar to my rack tom, anyways.....

sharkscott

My friend Damion is the only other left handed drummer I personally know, I know there are several professional drummers that are lefty's, but not many.

Its nice because it keeps most people off of my kit and it sucks because I have never been into a music store and been able to sit down behind a kit and play like everyone else. I can keep a beat playing righty but that's about it.

The first pic is is my regular Yamaha (late 80's, early 90's I think) with a old Tama Grandstar snare that I took the chrome wrap off of and refinished.

20"-Bass Drum with a double pedal attached, I used to have a huge double bass kit back in the day, ask my Brother.
12" and 16" Toms

The second pic has the Yamaha Toms replaces with 8"-10"-12"-14" Gretch Toms off of my Keyboard players "house kit". We were sitting around one night and he said that it would be cool if I had more toms and suggested switching out his toms for mine. its been that way ever since.

Here is a link to a thread on a drum forum site I frequent about my kits evolution and what I did to my snare drum.

Damn, this is sacry.....

Just caught the first part of your post of the pics - I started taking the drums seriously in 1987 myself. August, 1987, to be exact.

First, we both have 4-piece kits. Then, we're both 20 years into drumming. Next thing you'll tell me is that you're 35 years old - then it's booze time.

Re: The kit - hey, as long as it works. Nice refinishing job on the snare, BTW. Except for some minor deadening on the bass, my kit is wide open. Despite its relatively diminutive stature, that set-up really fills a room.

I started in September of 1986 and yes I am 35 (6-2-71) looks like we both need a drink.

Same as you, some foam along the bottom third of my Bass drum, the rest wide open. I used to have a huge kit then I pared it down to the four piece. That's when I started to get good. I say if you can't get it done on a four piece you need to practice more. Even with the four toms I have now I still really only use two of them.

If you look at most of the great drummers of all time, they all have four piece kits. The first four or five Black Sabbath albums Bill Ward was only using a four piece kit. Ringo Starr, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, I could go on.

This is cool, talking drums on phxsuns.net site...I gotta remember to thank my Brother for getting me on here.

:-)

Well, as I'm fresh out of scotch, a virtual toast then shark: 9-27-71. Here's to wide open kits. :D

Yeah, Gene and Buddy started out with 4-piece kits. Then Gene - in 1939 - and Buddy - in 1940 - switched to 5-pieces, both adding that 18 x 16 floor tom - like I want to, eventually.

Always been 4-pieces for me. I can play bigger kits (save for double bass), but the extra pieces just go to waste with me. I'm just so used to getting multiple sounds out of one drum at a time that I just don't need the extra hardware.

Also, the way I tilt my snare is the same way Gene (and Buddy, among others) had his: about 15-20 degrees facing front (away). I like to get as much as I can out of my rimshots, damnit.....

What kind of heads do you use? I've got a coated Remo Ambassador batter on the snare (can't use brushes without it  ), clear Remo Ambassador batter on the bass and Remo Fiberskyn 3's top and bottom on both the toms (got a Fiberskyn 3 on the front of the bass as well).

Cheers!

For my Toms, I use Aquarian Performance-II 2-ply heads because I hit them pretty hard and it takes out the ugly overtones without killing the tone of the drum.

For my Bass Drum, I use an Aquarian Super Kick-II which is just like the tom heads I use but I put a Kevlar double dot where the beaters from my double pedal hit it so that I don't have to buy a new head all the time, actually since I put that Kevlar dot on I haven't had to buy a new head yet.

For the Snare, I use a New Orleans Special, A clear single ply head with Power Dot material on the top of it. The textured Power Dot material helps protect it and makes using brushes sound fantastic. I have also stenciled a circle in the center to help me hit it dead on and a couple of curves off center where I get awesome rim-shot sounds. I can make my snare sound like three, if I hit it right. I am almost completely self taught so I have to do things like that to help me be more consistent.

For cymbals, I used to be a HUGE Zildjian guy and then a few years ago I was using someone else's kit and they had this Paiste 2002 crash that I fell in love with and have since outfitted my whole kit with.

15" 2002 Sound-edge Hi-Hats
16" 2002 Medium
17" 2002 Crash
18" 2002 Novo-China
16" Alpha China
12" 802 Splash
20" Signature Dry Heavy Ride

My Cymbals are worth way more than my drums but I am crafty. Between E-bay, pawnshops and the newspaper I got all of them for an average of half of retail. I just had to have patience, which the man in my family are not known for.

I gotta tell ya, it was finding a used, left-handed double pedal that was the needle in the haystack. I was not about to pay $300+ bucks AND have to wait for it to be shipped to the store from the factory because no one in the U.S. stocked them. I looked for over a year before I chanced across one for $100 used and snatched it up like..well..snatch. LOL

SwingMan
04-03-2007, 04:55 PM
I'm not really a hard player, but I use the Fiberskyn's on the toms because, even when you hit 'em good, they still retain a nice, warm, full sound.

I also use a thicker (than usual, relatively) bottom (snare) head on my snare - cuts down on the rimshot ring, yet still preserves a pretty bright, responsive sound.

I also use the clear batter head on the bass because, well, my right leg was never real strong. I mean, I get a little better punch out of the kick that way (my deadener is "pleated" duct tape on the batter, BTW. ).

My Cymbals are worth way more than my drums but I am crafty. Between E-bay, pawnshops and the newspaper I got all of them for an average of half of retail. I just had to have patience, which the man in my family are not known for.

Brother, you know it.

When I picked up my present kit, I paid $700 for it - going retail, I'd have to shell out at least twice that for all the cymbals. Fortunately, I've got a few friends that run into good deals on drums and equipment and one guy inparticular who calls me the instant he comes across a steal (was able to get those Avedis Zildjian circa 1948 12" hats for just $60 thanks to this guy), whether I can afford it or not. He does a lot of legwork by chance for me, if that makes amy sense.

But, I never really was much of a brand guy where cymbals are concerned - never stuck to one inparticular, I just buy 'em based on sound alone. Don't have a single, brand new cymbal on my kit, but it's all good. Patience is definitely required (along with a wallet that doesn't grow cobwebs every week).

I paid $500 for my kit at Bizarre Drums before they moved onto 7th avenue.

I traded a pair of 14" Zildjian New Beats straight across for the Tama Snare from my friend Damion, he said he never really liked it. Now he jokes that he wants it back since I tuned it up, polished the hardware and refinished it. I jokingly told him I would sell it back to him for $700, of which it would take every penny of to find another snare that would even come close to sounding as good as it does.

Here is a link to the myspace page for my band, not the greatest recordings but the snare still comes through really well. the song "Beach House Rave" is a drum machine not me. It was written before I joined up and SIFT is my friend Damion playing, He got me the gig playing with Curium when he went to Iraq.

Well shit, shark. For whatever reason, my internet connection keeps cutting out when my browser's downloading the damn page!!!

Sucks ass, because I was really getting into "Trinity" until it quit at around the :30 second mark. Sounds a lot like the groove I had when I co-led a local band called "Alucard" in the late 1990's - no, not THAT band. We came before 'em & had a heavy, freestyle type of Doors/Cream influence with a lot of ride and tons of groove - lots of jazz rhythms/riffs mixed in. From the little I heard of "Trinity", I love the way you provide a steady foundation for the keys. Double pedal work doesn't overpower at all - you just intro little rips every now & then. Damn internet, I was diiging on "Trinty" but good.....

Unfortunately, we never got past the demo recording/occasional Mason Jar gig. But, it sounds like you guys did your recordings "live", just like my band Alucard did. No overdubbing, just serving it up raw. Right on. :D

The Emerald Lounge!!! My God, I had no idea that joint was still around. The bass man and my co-leader in that band lived about half a click northwest of there - just off of 15th Ave. on Windsor just south of Thomas - and on more than a few occasions, we'd stop in there for a beer or a shot or three before rehearsals.

.....if that's the same Emerald Lounge I'm thinking of - on 7th Ave. just off of I-10 before McDowell?
